Replacing a transmission filter is something that you can do by yourself or pay a mechanic to do for you. It is one of two things that you can do for your vehicle’s transmission to keep it running strong and problem free for the duration of its life. Changing the transmission filter and the fluid for the specified mileage will also keep your transmission lubricated and running properly.
When replacing the transmission filter it is also important to replace the fluid. The reason for this is because there is no use replacing one without the other.

Here are some steps to changing the transmission filter and fluid:
• One of the first things to do is run the vehicle around for at least a few miles to heat up the transmission fluid.
• Park the vehicle on a level surface.
• Raise the car with the proper equipment so you can get underneath it.
• Get a drain pan and place it under the transmission in the proper location for your vehicle.
• Remove the drain plug if your vehicles transmission is equipped with one. If your transmission does not have a plug, you will have to loosen the transmission pan in such a way that the fluid will drain out. This is best done by losing one side more than another allowing the slant to help the fluid run out. This fluid will be hot so remember to be careful!
• Once all the transmission fluid has drained out continue to remove the rest of the bolts paying attention to the fact that more transmission fluid may be sitting on top of the pan to be removed.
• Carefully remove any of the old gaskets off of the pan and other part of the transmission because it will need to be replaced.
• Locate the transmission filter and remove it by losing any bolts or clips that may be holding it securely in place. Also remove any old gaskets, seals and similar parts that were in place for the old filter.
• Replace the filter and all seals necessary then refasten the filter in place.
• Replace the transmission pan gasket and fasten transmission pan bolts properly and to the right torque before refilling the transmission with fluid.
You should now be ready to go it’s not a bad idea to check for any leaks before and after a test drive. If you do not have the proper tools or knowledge to do this type of work then it will be in your best interest to leave this type of job to a professional.
